PROFESSORS OF FAR EASTERN STUDIES DEPARTMENT MET WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Professors of the Department of Far Eastern Studies met with the President of the Republic of Korea. The state visit of the President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in to Kazakhstan on April 21-23 is a part of his tour of Central Asian countries.

High-level talks were focused on bilateral trade and economic cooperation, international cooperation, as well as on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Prior to the visit to Nur-Sultan, where President Moon had a meeting scheduled with the First President Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, President Moon visited Almaty and met with representatives of the Korean diaspora of Kazakhstan and South Korean citizens residing in Almaty.

Academic staff of the Department of Far Eastern Studies - ethnic Koreans, as well as South Korean citizens took part in the official meeting at the Rixos Hotel. There are 6 professors - ethnic Koreans, and 7 professors from South Korea at the Department of Far Eastern Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In his welcoming speech President Moon noted that he was very proud of the fact that ethnic Koreans of Kazakhstan took an active part in raising the socio-economic level of Kazakhstan and that they hold positions of influence in Kazakhstani society. He thanked the Kazakh people for the warm relationship between the peoples living in the hospitable land of Kazakhstan.

During the President’s stay in Almaty, 20 allumnis and students of the Department of Far Eastern Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University had been working as official interpreters. Following the meeting, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Almaty highly appreciated Al-Farabi Kazakh National University for the qualified interpreters.
