Professor, Eleonora Dusenovna Suleimenova – an outstanding specialist on the theory of language – works in department of general linguistics since 1970; From 1995 she is a head of this department – a member of Presidium of International Association of Teachers of Russian language and literature (Bratislava, 1999), member of Social Council on languages and culture of Basic Organization of States – participants from CIS (Moscow, 2000), member of Scientific Council of INTAS (Brussels,2003), expert of INTAS (Brussels, 1996-1999), member of International Editorial Council of journal “Russian language abroad” (Moscow,1999), “Russian Language Journal” (Washington, 2000); member of International Editorial Council of journal “Vestnik IATRL” (Moscw, 1999), president of Kazakh Association of Teachers of Russian language and literature (Almaty, 1998). In 1993-1994, E.D. Suleimenova is a professor of Department of Slavic at University of Maryland (USA).


From 1997 to present, E.D. Suleimenova is a chairman of dissertational council Д 14 А.01.31 (1997-2001), then Д 14А.01.22 (2001 – at present) on the defense doctors dissertations concerning three specialties 10.02.01 Russan language, 10.02.19 theory of language, 10.02.20 comparative - historical, typological and contrastive linguistics at al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Under the direction of professor G.V. Kolshanskii at Moscow State Institute of Foreign languages named M. Toreza, E.D. Suleimenova defended her candidate’s dissertation “Problem of the definition the language as an object of linguistics” (Moscow, 1969); later she defended the doctor’s dissertation “Semantic parameters of word in inter-lingual research: theoretical and applied aspects” (Moscow, 1992).

Spheres of scientific activity – general linguistics (general semantics, theory of nomination, cognitive aspects of language, language ability and comprehension of second language, methodology and methods of linguistics), sociolinguistics (language situation and language politics, functioning of Kazakh and Russian languages in Kazakhstan), theoretical and applied lexicography, comparative linguistics (a problem of commensurability of languages and reducibility to linguistic description of multistructural languages, metalinguistics, contrastive analysis of semantics and pragmatics of Kazakh and Russian languages, linguistic bases of teaching languages, theory of general lexicography and terminography and others).

E.D. Suleimenova has published more than 160 works on Kazakh, Russian and English languages. Most significant publications- monographs “Notion of sense in modern linguistics” (Almaty, 1986), “Kazakh and Russian languages: bases of contrastive linguistics” (Almaty, 1996), “Actual problems of Kazakh linguistics: 1991-2001” (Almaty, 2001); “Dictionary on Linguistics” (Almaty, 1998; one of the authors and editor), “Dictionary of sociolinguistics of terms” (Almaty, 2002; in co-authorship); eleven books on Kazakh language: educational complex “Kazakh language, composed of 5 books, video cassettes and two audio cassettes” (Almaty, 1996; 2007; in co-authorship); books of business Kazakh: “Office work” (Astana, 2000; in co-authorship); “Kazakh language” (Astana, 2002, in co-authorship); educational complex “Office work”, where it was realized an idea of level teaching of Kazakh business language (Almaty, 2002; in co-authorship); in 1997-2007 was written 11 teaching modulus on Kazakh language for Internet http://www/cenasianet.org (in co-authorship); educational complexes “Russian language” for 7th, 8th, 9th grades of general schools (Almaty, 2000; 2003; 2007; 2008; in co-authorship) and others.

Under the direction of E.D. Suleimenova there were prepared 15 doctors, 34 candidates of philological sciences and 2 doctors of PhD (one is the citizen of USA, William Rivers “Factors Influencing Attitudes and Behaviors towards Language Use among Kazakhstani University-Level Students” – National Foreign Language Center, Washington DC, USA & University of Maryland, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, USA – 2003).

Professor Gulmira Bayanzhanovna Madieva – specialist on theory of onomastics – from 1996 works in this department; in 1997-2000 – chairman of faculty committee; in 2000-2002 she was a scientific secretary of dissertational council Д14А.01.22; 2000-2001 was a head of this department; editing member of “Orleu” journal (2000-2002); A secretary of social union “KATRL”; responsible editor of “Bulletin of KATRL”. Defended the candidate’s on theme: “Gidronimy of East Kazakhstan”, supervisor was professor A.S. Amanzholov; doctor’s thesis was written on “Onomastic space of Modern Kazakhstan: structure, semantics, precedention, lemmatization” (2005). 7 candidate’s dissertations were defended by the direction of G.B. Madieva.

The sphere of her interests is the problems of theoretical and applied onomastics, bilingual lexicography and general linguistics. G.B. Madieva published more than 100 works and there is a monography “Theory and practice of onomastics” (Alamaty, 2003), G.B. Madieva – one of the developers of international project "The Lexicographical Description of Loanwords in Kazakh" INTAS-96-0073, one of the authors of “Dictionary of general linguistics” (Almaty, 1998), she is a coauthor of educational complex for 7th grades, included the book “Russian language”, “Methodical leadership” and “Collection of dictations and compositions” (Almaty, 2004; 2007).
