Geography – an integral part of structure of modern classical university education. Geographical science adequately represented within the precincts of the al-Farabi Kazakh National university, , celebrating in 2004 its 70 th anniversary

   For 63 years of the existence the faculty has prepared more than 5 thousand specialists of a geographical profile: geographers, meteorologists, hydrologists, ecologists, cartographers, managers of tourism. Graduates of university successfully work in establishments, divisions and firms of a geological, economic, ecological profile, in system KAZHYDROMET, Water Resources, at higher and secondary high school.

  Faculty sources had the outstanding scientists-geographers who have brought the big contribution to development of a geographical science in Kazakhstan. Among them we name the prof. V.A.Sokolov, the prof. M.Z.Zhandaev, prof. G.G.Muravlev, docent Z.P.Kozhenkov, the prof. V.I.Korovin, prof. A.V.Chigarkin and other contribution to formation of geographical faculty academician U.A.Dzholdasbekov has brought on a post of the rector Treasury.

  Scientific authority of geographical faculty proves to be true its outstanding contribution to preparation of scientific shots of the top skills. It operates only in the Republic united (with Institute of geography of RК) Dissertational Council about protection doctor's and master's theses on specialities: physical geography, biogeography and geography of soils; economic, social and political geography; geoecology; a land hydrology, water resources and hydrochemistry.

   Preparation of scientific shots is conducted through postgraduate study within the limits of listed above specialties.

   Faculty research scholars identified the need to develop the theory of geographical science and the demands of practice. The basic directions of scientific research of scientists of geographical faculty are connected with a problem of complex studying of natural resources of Kazakhstan, their rational use and the decision of problems of wildlife management. The greatest successes are reached in area of lanscapes, studying of geochemistry of a landscape, a hydrological mode of the rivers of Kazakhstan, working out of a weather forecast and actions for prevention of pollution of atmospheric air, in sphere of geoecology and glaciology, territorial placing of productive forces, developments of the theory of tourism.

  Formation of modern structure of geographical faculty, formation of its faculty, creation of scientific potential have passed some stages.

 It is important to notice that at all stages of development of geographical faculty its activity has been closely connected with life of Kazakhstan, satisfaction of requirement of economy of Republic in highly skilled scientific, engineering, teaching personnel of a geographical profile.
