From 18th till 28th of May summer school (workshop) «Flora and the dynamics of vegetation of the Ile-Balkhash region. Biodiversity conservation in Central Asia» at the Department of Biodiversity and bioresources of al-Farabi KazNU was held. Summer school was organized by al-Farabi KazNU in collaboration with Central Asian Biodiversity Network (CABNET), Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald and Michael Succow Foundation. Also scientists from research institutes of Almaty, Tashkent and Samarkand took part in workshop.
The department of biodiversity and bioresources conducted the most interesting and important workshop for all students, teachers and others, who in love of our beautiful Ile-Balkhash region! First day of workshop was hiking in the mountains with students of Greifswald University. Next step was to learn from guest-professors of summer school. During the workshop were presenting Prof. Michael Succow, Prof. Sebastian Schmidt, Academic Baitulin, Dr. Niels Thevs and others. However, main participants were students. Students of al-Farabi KazNU presented about vegetation, economy and projects of the Ile-Balkhash region. At the same time our colleagues presented about main concepts of sustainable development, water resources and ecosystem services. After all, participants of workshop were able to explore more the region by expedition. During the expedition students had several stops to see different landscapes, for example, steppe, semi-dessert and dessert.
April 25, 2013 at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology was held student conference with students of 2nd degree courses "5B070100" – Biotechnology (BT Group 201-210, 120 students). The purpose and objectives of the conference to discuss the results of research projects on the module "Plant Biotechnology" course "Fundamentals of biotechnology." Aims to stimulate students' interest in scientific research, the disclosure of their cognitive and creative abilities. On March 11, 2013 at hostel #7 English Club’s meeting took place. Moderator Prof. Zaure Aytasheva, Head of the Department of Molecular biology and genetics. Topic of the talk: Epigenetics as heritable change in gene expression that occurs without any change in DNA sequence.
On the eve of a holiday, on the 6th of March, 2013, together with the Center of career and business of the Department for the academic questions KazNU after name al-Farabi the biology and biotechnology faculty and department of biophysics and biomedicine held a meeting with Baykoshkarova Saltanat Berdenovna, the graduate of biological faculty, the head of clinic "Ekomed".
December 7 2012, Faculty of Biology and biotechnology and Scientific research Institute of “Ecology problems” had organized conference “Modern problems and perspectives of ecological, morphological and morpho-functional researches in Kazakhstan” dedicated to 70 anniversary of well-known histologist academician Saparov Kuandyk Abenuly.

Workshop and Training Course on Vegetables Propagation
Out-door Workshop and Training Course on Pumpkin and Bean Propagation has been arranged by the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics together with the staff of the university, “Zhanga Talap” Agrobiostation and the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology on September 20, 2012. The aim was to share experience in planting, weeding, watering and harvesting 11 varieties of pumpkins and more than 20 varieties of common beans and its relations. Reports have been presented by Prof. Zaure Aytasheva, Mr. Shynar Masqirat(graduate student of the 2-nd year), Mr. Murat Tagayev, Ms. Zhanna Urazova (graduate students of the 1-st year), and Ms. Sandigul Baiseyitova.
Undergraduates have measured fruits parameters, calculated their number and identified new prospective hybrids (7) obtained using local and new giant pumpkins introduced for the first time in Kazakhstan.
One of the principal goals for KazNU is active involvement of students into ongoing research. The event described here and illustrated by the photos enclosed is completely in line with the university’s strategy.

On September 19, from 11:00 am to 12:00 p.m. in the pavilion № 9 "Atakent" an opening of a seminar on "Modern methods of water quality control in the laboratory and industry" took place.
Faculty members of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, al-Farabi Kazakh National University - Associate Professors Shimshikov B.E., Bildibaeva R.M., Voronova N.V. with 30 students of the 4th year, specialty "Ecology" actively participated in this seminar.
Students got familiarized with the modern equipment and new technologies for the rapid diagnosis, automated and automated laboratory analysis. Intelligent digital sensors, laboratory spectrophotometers, and some other instruments were presented.
Two brilliant research stars on our department’s sky
Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, KazNU in partnership with the Association of Graduates of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology has arranged the afternoon meeting with two American professors, the former graduates of the Department Molecular Biology and Genetics and School of Biology, Professor Ruslan Biyashev (KazNU graduate of 1980), Research Manager, Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg, Virginia, and Professor Dos Sarbassov (KazNU graduate of 1991), Head of the Laboratory in M.D. Anderson Center, University of Texas, Houston, USA for the undergraduate and graduate students. The meeting was held by the Dean, Professor Tamara Shalakhmetova. Invited professors have tackled times when they had managed to get their training at our university, their favorite instructors, then conditions, subsequent careers, as well as current conditions for taking B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses in the American universities and opportunities for entering these universities by taking GRE or TOEFL examinations. Both professors hold on currently teaching at the department by providing modern lectures and master classes in frame of the master as doctorate courses on gene regulation and specific cell signalling. In October 2011 Professors Dos Sarbassov together with Professor Amangeldy Bissenbayev representing our department has accomplished the supervision on Dr. Rakhan Aimbetov’s work, who has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on TOR signaling network in Astana after 3 years of extensive training at KazNU and M.D. Anderson Center, Texas, USA. Professor Ruslan Biyashev has recently set up a special Biyashev fellowship in commemoration of his grandfather, Academician Gakash Biyashev, who has been chairing our department in 1948-1970. This fellowship is supposed to be granted to the best KazNU student in evolution biology. Ongoing fruitful collaboration of our department with two invited professors is anticipated to be continued in 2012. It includes lecturing, developing student exchange, joint Ph.D. programmes and research projects in fields of mutual interest and expertise.
Meeting of students with graduate Olzhasom Kanatovichem Djusenovym
On November, 10th at faculty of biology and biotechnology, Al-Farabi there has passed a meeting with the director of Open Company "KazEcoSolutions", the associate of ecologists "IEMA" - Djusenovym Olzhasom Kanatovichem. As organizers of a meeting the Association of graduates has acted. On meetings there were students of older years, the chairman of association of university Berdimbetova B., the chairman of association of faculty Mukasheva Etc., the deputy dean Erezhepov A.E. meeting passed in the friendly chat form. Olzhas Kanatovich has told to students some moments of the personal biography, in particular, about the training at biological faculty.
After university Olzhas Kanatovich termination KazStrojServis has been invited by National company "KazMunaiGaz" to a post of the expert-ecologist of department of supervision of quality of buildings, a labor safety and Joint-Stock Company environment «, and since April, 2005 he has headed work of department of preservation of the environment in joint-stock company« PetroKazakhstan Kumkol Resources.
Has told about the company of Open Company "KazEcoSolutions" which he has created. Answering questions of students of Olzhas Kanatovich, has mentioned a question on modern requirements of employers to graduates of high schools.

October 17, 2012 was a professional platform for dialogue with the representatives of science, education and industry as part of the basic research program on "Kazakhstan and the current geopolitical situation in Central Asia." A presentation was made professor of geography, land management and cadastre Nadyrov M. Sh. The report highlights key trends and geopolitical framework of development of Kazakhstan with the current political and economic situation in Central Asia.
The event was attended by representatives of the Institute of Philosophy and Political Science, "Association of NGOs for the revival and development of cultural traditions," KISI under the President, "Inayat", Department of Geography and natural resources, Department of biology and biotechnology, 3rd year students of the Department of Geography, Planning and Inventory .
