Faculty of Oriental Studies of Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi will hold an International round table "The role and place of Oriental studies in the Research University" dedicated to 20^th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Roundtable Topic:
- Orientalism as a science and education;
- Integration of the educational process and Oriental science;
-directions and mechanisms of cooperation with domestic and foreign research centers;
- Problems of SRWS;
- Commercialization of research.

Week of Korean studies

Week of Korean studies was spent on the chair of Korean and Japanese studies, Faculty of Oriental studies during 24-28 October, 2011. On the opening of this week director of the Korean education centre Lee Gyeon Ho and emeritus professor Kim Chong Pok were present.

On 25 October within the week of Korean studies very interesting oratory contest was spent. Students of 2, 3 and 4 courses from the chair of Korean and Japanese studies took an active part in this competition. Participants read their reports on Korean language, covering topics like friendship between nations, education, family, hobby and others. Jury of the contest – teachers from South Korea Chan Beng Soon, Miong Sunok and Ji Seun Hee.

By the results of competition Sundetova Ainur (2 course, specialty “foreign philology”) with the report about friendship won 1^st place. Student of the second course Kairat Jadyra (specialty “orientalism”) with the report about parents took 2^nd place. And student of the third course Bichuinova Jibek (specialty “foreign philology”), whose report was about hobby, took 3^rd place.

One of the most interesting competitions within the week of Korean studies, which took place on 26 October, was competition “Director himself”. Participants from all courses of the chair of Korean and Japanese studies were making films themselves during one month. Such movies like love story, action, comedy and drama were represented by their authors on this competition. Team “KazKor Entertainment” with comedy “Girl of the Choson” won “Grand Prix” prize.

Competition “The most delicious kimpap”, which took place on 27 October, became next amazing and “tasty’ contest within the week of Korean studies. Students of the chair, divided into groups of 4 persons, competed in making traditional Korean dish, called kimpap. Jury assessed participants by not only the taste of kimpap, but also by design of dishes and creativity of teams.

By the results of competition team “Kim Gyeol” won in two nominations: “The most delicious kimpap” and “Creativity”. Team “WGB” won prizes for “Best design” and “Original name of the team”. Other teams received certificates for participation.

Competition “Minute of fame” finished week of Korean studies. On this contest students showed their talents. On 28 October there were representatives from South Korean bank “Shinhan”, who took active part in rewarding winners of all competitions.

The national competition for the scholarships of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Foundation

For the first time in the history of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Irina Davydova, 4th year student of Arab Department, won the national competition for the scholarships of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Foundation. This high award is well deserved by Ira, she is a repeated winner of the Kazakh, Arabic, English languages competition, she put together a team of "Orient Express" to participate in the intellectual competition "Brain Ring", she was taking top place in the competition of student papers, actively involved in carrying out various department and faculty cultural activities. Ira has rich experience, in the days of Arab youth unrest in at-Tahrir Square, she was in Cairo, watching these historical events of Egypt.
The scholarship is granted for a year, but student have to be accountable for her successes at the end of each semester.
