The faculty of law is the oldest faculty of the Kazakh National University, founded in 1955 as the successor of Almaty Juridical Institute (AJI) - the first higher educational institution in Kazakhstan for preparing lawyers. Due to the best traditions of education with the application of modern methods the faculty trains highly qualified professionals.
Teaching
The law faculty has about 2500 students, out of which 1800 are day students. Moreover the faculty has a shortened course of preparing specialists who already have higher or specialized secondary education. The law faculty trains specialists in jurisprudence in Kazakh and Russian languages. The degree in law can be obtained by day trainings or by evening trainings.
For day students:
- 050301 - jurisprudence (bachelor of jurisprudence) - 4 years (on the basis of secondary education)
- 050301 - jurisprudence (bachelor of jurisprudence) - 3 years (on the basis of specialized secondary education)
For evening students:
- 050301 - jurisprudence (bachelor of jurisprudence) - 4 years (on the basis of secondary education)
- 050301 - jurisprudence (bachelor of jurisprudence) - 3 years (on the basis of specialized secondary education)
- 050301 - jurisprudence (bachelor of jurisprudence) - 2 years (on the basis of higher education).
In the period of studying the students attend the course of military training.
In order to prepare highly qualified specialists in every specific sphere the students have a possibility to choose their specialization. The specialty of 050301, the jurisprudence, presupposes the following specializations:
- Criminal law
- Tax law
- Public law
- Civil law
The students who desire to continue the scientific and pedagogical path have a possibility to join master and then doctorate course. The master course proceeds in the following way:
- 6N0301 - jurisprudence (for day students) - 2 years the scientific-pedagogical plus 1 year of profile master course.
Masters in jurisprudence can be specialized in: - Criminal law
- Finance law
- Public law
- Civil law
- Social and environmental law.
The doctorate program of the faculty trains the specialists in all the spheres of jurisprudence.
Professors and trainers
Over 20 doctors and professors of jurisprudence work in the faculty of law. Among them professor doctor Sartayev S., member of the science academy of Kazakhstan; professor doctor Baideldinov D., professor Agybayev A. and others. Moreover there are over 50 candidates of science, docents as well as practicing lawyers invited from Parliament, Constitutional Council, Supreme Court, President's Administration, Prosecutor General's Office, Government and law machinery. Many of them were trained in universities of United States, Europe, Turkey and others.
Many young scientists work at the faculty collecting experience in order to improve their professional skills and to become worthy successors of their elder colleagues.
Scientific life
On the law faculty of Kazakh National University continuously work two dissertation counsels for defenses of candidates' and doctorates' thesis in most of branches of the specialty of law.
The law faculty regularly organizes international and national conferences on the actual problems of law. It organizes as well the yearly juridical Olympiad between students of Kazakhstan.
Training resource and methods base
The law faculty consists of nine specialized departments as well as department of foreign languages with the best teachers of English, French and German languages.
On the faculty there is a "criminal training-ground", "courtroom" and law students consultancy where work the best students of last years of education.
The members of the faculty are the authors of more than 50 programs in all juridical disciplines. These programs are used in law faculties of all universities of the country.
The faculty possesses the oldest library in Kazakhstan with rich collection of juridical manuals and monographs as well as archive documents. Students prepare for the classes in specially equipped learning-halls, including those for master students and doctorate students, computer rooms and Internet room.
In the last five years the professors and members of the faculty had published over 1000 scientific works. Among them there are more than 30 monographs, 50 manuals, about 30 document collections, dictionaries and reference books.
The law faculty issues a periodical journal "Vestnik KazNU. Seria juridicheskaja" ("Bulletin of KazNU. Law series"), which publishes works dedicated to actual problems of law and state in Russian, Kazakh and foreign languages of professors, doctorates, masters and best law students.
Information and technical resource base
Students of the law faculty are using the modern computers for their work and study.
Law faculty has permanent contracts with state bodies and institutions, where the students can make traineeships and fellowships: Parliament, Supreme Court, Constitutional Council, Prosecutor General's Office, Ministry of Inner Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Committee of National Security, Tax Committee, Finance Police and others.
International work
The law faculty has permanent connections with such institutions as representative office of UN in Kazakhstan, Soros Foundation - Kazakhstan, regional representative office of the Eurasia Foundation, IREX, Fulbright, CEELI, Central and East Europe Legal Initiative.
The faculty makes regularly exchange of scientific experience with the specialists of the other countries. Young professionals and students can make a stage abroad (in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, England, Germany, USA)
Students' life
The law faculty is the initiator and the organizer of yearly republic Olympiad of the students of law faculties of all the universities of the Republic.
At the law faculty with the support of Soros Foundation - Kazakhstan was established and is functioning successfully Students' Juridical Clinic where the best students of the faculty give free of charge the consultations for the population.
The faculty of law provides for students various activities: scientific clubs, summer camp on the Issyk-Kul Lake, different competitions and shows, such as "Kyz Syny" - the Miss Beauty and "Zhigit Sultany" - competition for the real men.
At the Palace of Students named after Zholdasbekov U. with its 1600 places are often organized concerts and performances for students.
The sport center of the university provides for the students the possibility to exercise different types of sport activities: tennis, shaping, boxing, volleyball, wrestling etc. Among our graduates and students there are world and Olympic champions: Turlykhanov D., Ibraimov E, Bairamukov F. and others.
