 History of the department

      The department of physics was founded on 15 January 1934, at first as a section of the department of physics and mathematics.

     In May 1959 the section of physics of the department of physics and mathematics was reorganized into an independent department.

    The department of physics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is widely recognized educational and scientific center training highly qualified specialists in fundamental and applied physics, creating a powerful stream of new technologies and devices in the modern world.

     At the present time the department of physics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is the leader of physical-technical education in the Republic, it has high scientific-pedagogical potential, well developed material-technical base and extensive international scientific relations.

     The main objective of the staff of the physics department is coordination of its activities in order to provide high quality of training specialists in physics and further development of scientific research.

 The students can get military training at the military-training chair of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

  Teaching staff

      Retaining traditions of best scientific physics schools the staff of the department includes over 30 doctors of science, professors and more than 100 candidates of science. Among the staff members there are honoured workers of science and technology, academicians of NAS RK, laureates of state prizes and scholarships, winners of grants “Best University Teacher”.

 Scientific life

     The department of physics is incorporated with the  Scientific Research Institute of Experimental and Theoretical Physics (SRIETP), which is the first research institute affiliated with the higher educational institution in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Institute has 6 departments including 17 scientific laboratories. Scientists of the Institute work in the international  research teams solving global problems in the framework of international projects (INTAS, DAAD, IAEA, UNESCO, ISTC, NATO, INCO-COPERNICUS and other projects). The department of physics organizes international and republican symposia, meetings and conferences, publishes physics series of scientific journal “Vestnik KazNU”.

International relations

     The department of physics in cooperation with 17 universities from foreign countries (Germany, UK, USA, Spain, Italy, Japan, Russia) carries out preparation of master and PhD program students and works in the frames of international projects.

 Educational and technical base

      The department of physics has extensive material-technical base. It includes unique complexes and facilities included in the world network of cosmic rays such as neutron super-monitor and powerful supertelescope on plastic scintillators used to study properties of cosmic radiation, modern research complexes “Integra Terma” and “Integra spectra” based on scanning atomic and tunnel microscopes for studying nano-sized objects, linear electron accelerator U-003, X-ray spectrum facilities, cryogenic facilities, laser and plasma facilities, unique technological and measuring equipment for optoelectronics and crystal growth, Auger high-resolution spectrometers and other facilities. The department also has up-to-date computer classes with connection to the  Internet and multimedia classes. Furthermore, all chairs have computers for everyday work where the students can fulfill their scientific, graduate and diploma works, prepare their master dissertations  using the latest technical achievements.

 The department  has 6 chairs:

  • Chair of theoretical physics;
  • Chair of thermal physics, standardization and metrology;
  • Chair of solid-body physics and materials science;
  • Chair of optics and plasma physics;
  • Chair of nuclear physics;
  • Chair of non-linear optics and electronics.

The department has 4 laboratories participating in the academic process:

  •    Laboratory of linear accelerator;
  •    Laboratory of semiconductor instrument-making;
  •    Laboratory of lecture physical experiment;
  •    Laboratory of cryophysics and cryotechnologies.

Students’ scientific life

      Our students actively participate in scientific research carried out by scientists of the department.  The chairs organize scientific seminars, and the results of their research students annually present at traditional scientific students’ conferences. The best students’ works are awarded diplomas and prizes and are recommended for participation in scientific symposia of the CIS and foreign countries, where they get high appreciation. The bachelor, master and PhD-program students fulfill their bachelor, master and PhD-diplomas and theses in 17 scientific laboratories of SRIETP.

 Students’ life

      The department organizes cultural events and involves students into leisure activities such as discotheques, “Physicist’s day”, Club of Merry and Smart, meetings with interesting people, charity actions, winter and summer sport competitions and tournaments, where the students of the department traditionally get prizes.

      The department has a hostel with rooms for 2 or 3 students, reading halls, computer classes and rooms of Students’ Council. The students can get military training at the military-training chair of the KazNU.

     All ceremonial, festive and cultural events are held in beautiful and up-to-date equipped halls and premises of U.A. Dzholdasbekov  Students’ Palace . The Students’ Palace has students’ groups of amateur artists. During summer vacations the students can go the Al-Farabi summer camp on Issyk-Kul  lake.

Students find application to their knowledge and skills

 Graduates of the department of physics can work in secondary and higher educational institutions, work as technical translators, in scientific research institutes and institutes of the Ministry of Education and Science, in the governmental structures, at the enterprises of telecommunication, transport, aviation and rocket industries, automaking and heat power engineering industries, enterprises of oil-and-gas, atomic and nuclear power sectors. Talented young specialists-physicists who got base education at the physics department of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University continue their education or work in different parts of the world: the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Japan and other countries. Many of our graduates became famous scientists and extensively contributed to the development of physics and applied technologies in the Republic of Kazakhstan and in other countries. There are many graduates whom education got at the department of physics enabled to gain success in business and state administration.
