Al-Farabi KazNU has became a member of the Worlds of Journalism Study Association (WJSA). This academic project aims to study the state of journalism in the world.

The main goal of the project, which is coordinated by the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), is to study the changes taking place in the professional views of journalists and their outlook, the transformation of functions in society and the environment in which they work. The VJSA’s partners are international organizations and professional associations of journalists – the UNESCO, the International Federation of Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, the European Journalism Training Association and many others.

The first pilot study was conducted between 2007 and 2011, in which participated researchers from 67 countries and more than 27,000 journalists surveyed. Since then, the research has expanded considerably. The World of Journalism Study now offers an advanced analysis of how journalists see their responsibilities, their attitude towards society and government, and the nature and meaning of their work. The third study, which launches this year, involves 110 countries, including Kazakhstan, represented by KazNU scholars. This opens new opportunities for integration of our country into the international media space.

At present, a database of respondents is being created with the forecast of coverage of more than 2.5 thousand journalists in Kazakhstan. In addition, specifics of media preferences of the population, level of development and consumption of digital technologies are being studied. In addition, it is planned to summarize the experience of the country’s mass media in the conditions of the pandemic and the participation of journalists in combating the spread of Covid-19.
