The Scientific Seminar «Ideas and Solutions by Professor Ogaz Sultaniev: Onomasiology, Valikhanov Studies, and Textbook Studies» was held at Al-Farabi KazNU. It was dedicated to the life and work of the famous scientist Ogaz Arystangalievich Sultanyev (02.21.1938 - 01.10.2006), the author of works on onomastics and the creative heritage of Shokan Ualikhanov.

This event is a traditional one in the seminar cycle of the «Epoch and Personality» project, which started in 2014 under the auspices of the Scientific and Expert Council of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.

The event was supported by the Department of General and Russian Linguistics and the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature of RUDN University (Moscow), whose leaders (Professor Denisenko V.N. and Professor Kovalenko A.G.) delivered greetings as part of the online broadcast.

The main speakers of the seminar who introduced the scientific heritage of Professor Ogaz Sultaniev are as following: Head of the Department of Russian Philology and World Literature, Professor B.U. Dzholdasbekova, Ph.D., Professor, member of the NES ANK N.Zh. Shaimerdenova, Ph.D., Associate Professor D. B. Amanzholova, Ph.D., Associate Professor of the L.N. Gumilyov ENU, member of the NES ANK M.A. Buribaev.

Speakers highlighted that Doctor of Philology, Professor Ogaz Sultanayev personified the best features of his growing era and culture. The circle of scientific interests of Ogaz Sultanayev was related to the development of topical issues of linguistics in the field of onomasiology and word formation, lexicology and phraseology, onomastics and Turkology, teaching methods of Russian and Kazakh languages.

His works are devoted to the diachronic and synchronous aspects of the study of the linguistic phenomena of the Russian and Kazakh languages, the problems of bilingualism, its development and prospects. Numerous scientific works by O. A. Sultanyaev are devoted to the study of toponyms of Kokshetau (and the entire region) in an etymological and methodological vein. The study of the toponymy of the region predetermined the scientist’s steady scientific interest in the theoretical and practical problems of onomastics in general, which was one of the directions of his scientific activity.

At the end of the seminar, scientists emphasized the importance of taking into account the experience of the past and the need to study and comprehend the works of researchers of previous generations, preserving everything valuable for the present and future on the «tablets of history».

The seminar was organized by the Department of Russian Philology and World Literature of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the team of the Epoch and Personality project (leader: Ph.D., Associate Professor of L.N. Gumilyov ENU, member of the NES ANK Buribaev MA).
