Purpose

 

The educational program is aimed at training highly qualified professionals with strong knowledge of general geography associated with the knowledge of the land, basic laws of nature and society, impact of human activity on the environment, the principles of nature conservation, environmental management and sustainable development. Formation of competitiveness of graduates with a degree in geography, which will enable them as quickly as possible employment in the specialty.

Bachelors of specialty 050609 - Geography can perform the following professional activities: education (teaching); research; design and manufacturing; environmental protection; tourist and recreational; activities in socio-economic work as employees of departments, laboratories, industrial organizations, members of expeditions geological and geographical, economic, geographical and environmental profile, experts on regional forecasting and management; coordination as map editors; consulting work as an expert environmental advice; educational and pedagogical work as teachers of geography in secondary vocational schools, colleges and high schools; research work as scientists, leading engineers in research institutes, academic institutions, design and research and production organizations.

Education style

Learning & Teaching Approaches

The general learning style is task-based learning. There are some lecture courses, accompanied by practical works and seminars. Most learning is in small groups (up to 12 persons) and emphasizes calculation, estimation, discussion, and preparation of presentations and essay autonomously in small groups. Practical works aimed at improving individual skills solving theoretical and applied problems. In the final year about half time is dedicated to the final thesis, which is also presented and discussed with a discussion group of lecturers and peers.

-have an idea of the structure, subjects, regularities and dynamics of the development of modern geographic science; of specifics and forms of implementation of geographical studies; of goals, functions and main tasks of geography;

- know the basics of the teachings on the geographic shells of the Earth, the patterns of spatial distribution of geographic processes, modern geoecological processes occurring on Earth, the theoretical foundations of the fundamental sciences of the natural science cycle;

- know the scientific methods of accounting for natural resources when solving economic problems in their global and territorial aspects, the impact of differences in the natural environment on different production cycles, taking into account specific natural features of the territory and the features of the organization of the social system;

- use basic geographical knowledge to study global and regional patterns of the formation and structure of modern natural landscapes and the features of their changes under the influence of human economic activity, apply knowledge on the socio-economic geography of foreign countries and Kazakhstan, the geography of the population and the world economy for the solution of scientific and applied geographical tasks at the global, regional and local levels;

- analyze and evaluate the methodological problems of modern geography in solving professional problems, to know the main stages in the development of geographical sciences;

- use topographic and cartographic knowledge and skills to work with topographic maps, plans, aerial photographs and satellite imagery, be able to apply the cartographic method in geographic studies using the latest achievements in digital mapping and GIS technology;

- assess the impact on the environment, identify and diagnose problems of nature protection and systems of interaction between society and nature, solve environmental and geographic problems associated with sustainable development in conjunction with specialists and qualified researchers.

- Nature of soil formation, soil classification and geographic patterns of distribution of the main soil types;

- The basic concepts and theories of economic, social and political geography;

- Geographic patterns of development and deployment of the territorial socio-economic systems;

- Demographic, social and economic trends of the modern world community;

- Know the laws of evolution, reproduction and territorial organization of the population,

Physical geography, geomorphology and geo-ecology track:

- Know the theoretical foundations of landscape, the basic terms and definitions of landscape; landscape place in the general system of the natural sciences;

- Define impact of natural components on the properties and functioning of geo-systems;

- Using and knowing basic theoretical and methodological principles of modern land reclamation;

- According to the geological and structural features of a region to select the most effective methods of neo-tectonic studies (geological, geomorphological, geophysical, remote sensing, etc.);

- Dedicated latest tectonic structures, their spatial arrangement, the amplitude of the horizontal and vertical movements, both positive and negative patterns in map form with the appropriate symbols.

Economic, social and political geography track:

- Fundamentals of state management of transport complex of the country, and transport and communication services;

- Analyze the systemic approach as a methodological basis of socio-economic geography;

- Choose appropriate assessment methods and can evaluate the causes and consequences of economic and geographical processes and phenomena;

- The development of the political geography of the world, especially the modern national borders of Kazakhstan.

Natural using and landscape design track:

- Theoretical basis, terms and definitions of environmental economics; the place and role of natural resources in the economy of the state;

- Know the macro-meso microfoundations and principles of nature; natural-resource potential of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

- Analyze global problems of natural resources and their solutions; economic mechanisms of nature (economic evaluation of natural resources, payments for natural resources, and others.);
