The al-Farabi KazNU Museum is a scientific and information department of the university, the purpose of which is to preserve, enrich and promote the cultural and historical values of the university to ensure effective scientific and educational training, moral and patriotic education of graduates who are competitive in Kazakhstan and at the world level.

The museum at the university has existed since 1989, after 20 years its large-scale reconstruction was carried out. The opening of the new museum took place on October 13, 2009.  

The history of university creation rich in traditions is worthily represented in more than 5 thousand valuable historical documents and rare museum exhibits, which are skillfully and expressively collected in 120 showcases. The area of the museum complex is 1000 sq. meters. It unites: the Gallery of History, the Hall of Fame, the Hall of Sustainable Development of the University.

The conceptual idea of the gallery is to show the historical retrospective of the al-Farabi KazNU, reflecting the main milestones in the development of education and science in Kazakhstan.­­­ Historical documents related to the life of the university of different years, as well as to the origin and development of reputable scientific schools are presented. Reflection of the heritage of al-Farabi, the traditions laid down by the scientific schools of M.O. Auezov, K.I. Satpaev, T.T. Tazhibaev, E.B. Bekmakhanov, K.P. Persdskiy, A.B. Bekturov, D.V. Sokolsky, T.B. Darkanbaev, A.H. Kasymzhanov and many other remarkable scientists, is the gem of our museum. 

The atrium houses complexes, unique in content and artistic embodiment, dedicated to the heritage of the Great Oriental thinker, philosopher Abu Nasr al-Farabi and the development of Independent Kazakhstan.­ The museum is rich in photo galleries: "Graduates of the university are our pride" and "Honorary Professors and Doctors", where photographs of Nobel laureates who visited our university are presented. 

Achievements and prospects of faculties, research institutes and research centers are reflected in the showcases of the hall of prospective development of the university. In the center is a unique installation "Earth of the XXI century", symbolizing the planetary scale of modern Knowledge. New expositions in the 3D technology format are impressive, demonstrating the recent superb achievements of the university in transforming into a research university, entering the top of the best universities in the world.  

2022 is marked as the year of the outstanding teacher, publicist, translator, turkologist, linguist and politician, one of the leaders and active figures of the Alash movement Akhmet Baitursynov. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Teacher of the Nation, his granddaughter Ayman Baysalova donated a piano from the house-museum of the A. Baitursynov to our museum. 

The museum regularly hosts mobile exhibitions, including the exhibition of Krym Altynbekov, a leading scientist and restorer of archaeological artifacts of Central Asia, founder and head of the scientific and restoration laboratory "Island of Crimea". The museum's heritage includes expositions of world-famous archaeological finds: "Sarmatian priestess or Taksai Princess" and "Urzhar priestess" as well as materials about the "Golden Man", "Sarmatian Leader", and many others. These works have been exhibited in many countries of the world – in Russia, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Korea, China, the USA and Turkey. 

The exhibition of paintings by the best Kazakh masters of fine art – artists and sculptors is also organised in the museum.  

The al-Farabi KazNU Museum was awarded a Certificate of Honor "For active participation in the work of the veteran movement" from the City Council of Veterans, a Letter of Thanks from the Council of Veterans of the Bostandyk district of Almaty for great work on moral and patriotic education of youth, a Diploma "The best Museum of a higher educational institution", within the framework of the International Forum of Museologists "Museum as a phenomenon of history and modernity" in Astana, Honorary Diploma of the republican contest-review of public museums of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the nomination "Museums of higher educational institutions", dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of veteran organizations of Kazakhstan. The university museum took the honorable 1st place, was awarded a cup and a Certificate of Honor for active participation in the review competition in the nomination "Relay of Memory: we remember and honor". The al-Farabi Kazakh National University Museum was named "Museum of the Year 2015" and awarded an Honorary Diploma.
