By the order of the al-Farabi KazNU Rector №444 of 02.12.2015. "On the introduction of changes in the structure of the university" December 2, 2015, the Department of Epidemiology and Hygiene was established. The first head of the department was MD, Professor Saparbekov M.K. (January-July 2016). At present, the head of the department is the doctor of medical sciences, professor Tabayeva A.A. The basic structure of the department includes experienced, qualified medical teachers, scientists (doctors, candidates of medical sciences).

Tasks of the department:

- preparation of competitive specialists for public health services;

- conducting research work on the prevention of infectious and non-infectious diseases;

- development of educational materials on the basis of modern scientific achievements using computer technology;

 -collobaration with scientific research, educational institutions of near and far abroad, international and national professional public organizations and communities;

- Business partnership with organizations of state sanitary and epidemiological surveillance and treatment and prevention organizations of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

- Education of students on the basis of national culture open to go abreast of the new development and changes.

-Training of specialists of the department is carried out on the basis of credit technology: Bachelor (Preventive Medicine) - Bachelor's (Public Health), Master (Preventive Medicine). In addition, the department conducts training and retraining of specialists of the Republic of Kazakhstan on epidemiology, hygiene, prevention of infectious and non-infectious diseases.

In its activity the department is guided by the al-Farabi KazNU Academic Policy of, the State General Education Standards of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Bachelor's (Preventive Medicine, Public Health), Master (Preventive Medicine). Educational programs are accredited by the international agency ASIIN.
