The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Al-Farabi KazNU.

In the framework of the V Congress of leaders of world and traditional religions "Dialogue of religious leaders and politicians in the name of peace and development" and the meeting of President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, important events aimed at supporting initiatives in education, science, culture and sustainable development were held. During the ceremony of the official inauguration of the new UN building in Astana, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Al-Farabi University. The graduation ceremony was held by the rector of the university academician Galym Mutanov, who also awarded the distinguished guest the Grand Gold Medal of al-Farabi Kazakh National University for his outstanding contribution to peace, harmony and cooperation between the UN and Kazakhstan, and presented the certificate of honorary member of the international club "Friends Club" of al-Farabi KazNU.

KazNU, as a global UNAI Hub on sustainability, actively involves representatives of the scientific-educational environment in the process of finding solutions to global problems of mankind, protection of ecology and environment. The University is conducting a tremendous job of promoting the ideas of sustainable development, conducts research in the field of alternative and renewable energy sources. KazNU is the only university in the CIS, which was privileged to chair the section of the UN world summit "RIO+20" in Rio de Janeiro and to make the project "Green bridge through generations" in support of the initiatives of President N. Nazarbayev. The University was the organizer of the III Forum of Asian Universities "Eurasian diversity and the role of universities for sustainable development" which was held with participation of leading scientists of the world in the framework of Astana Economic Forum.
