IN MEMORY OF A DEAR TEACHER
On December 20, 2021, an outstanding scientist, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Technological Sciences of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan Ksandopulo G.I. passed away.
On December 20-21, 2022, the Institute of Combustion Problems and the Department of Chemical Physics and Materials Science of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University will hold the XIII International Symposium "CHEMICAL PHYSICS, MATERIALS SCIENCE, NANOMATERIALS", dedicated to the memory of G.I.Ksandopulo.
All labor activity of Georgy Ivanovich was connected with Kazakh State University named after S.M. Kirov (Treasury named after al-Farabi), which he graduated in 1953. G.I.Ksandopulo realized his excellent organizational skills by opening new structural subdivisions at the Faculty of Chemistry. So, in 1972, the faculty-wide laboratory of physical and chemical research methods (LFKhMI) was created in order to provide the educational and research processes of the faculty with modern research methods. Then, on the basis of LFKhMI, in 1978 he organized and headed the Department of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion (now the Department of Chemical Physics and Materials Science). At the same time, all undertakings of Georgy Ivanovich were supported by the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry B.A. Beremzhanov and the rector (in those years) U.A. Dzholdasbekov.Georgy Ivanovich made a great contribution to the chemistry and physics of gas-phase combustion processes, to the understanding of the features of the flame structure, and to the search for ways to effectively inhibit combustion processes. His monographs “Chemistry of the Flame” and “Chemistry of Gas-Phase Combustion”, published by the Khimiya publishing house in Moscow, are devoted to these issues. Georgy Ivanovich did a lot for the development and practical application of a promising non-traditional method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in the Republic of Kazakhstan, collaborating with Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Merzhanov A.G. - the discoverer of this unique kind of combustion process. A group of employees led by G.I.Ksandopulo and his student Ismailov M.B. A whole series of SHS refractories of the world-famous Furnon brand was developed. The volume of production of Furnon SHS refractories at that time was about 4,800 tons per year, the material was sent to all regions of the USSR, as well as Cuba, Germany, Italy, etc. High achievements in science and production contributed to the opening of the Intersectoral Scientific and Technical Center " SVS", which in 1991 was transformed into the Institute of Combustion Problems.G.I. Xandopoulo is the organizer of major scientific forums, with the participation of prominent scientists of world renown, such as Nobel Prize winner Academician N.N. Semenov, three times Hero of Socialist Labor Academician Ya.B. Zeldovich, the author of the scientific discovery of the SHS phenomenon, Academician A.G. Merzhanov and others, who raised the authority of Kazakhstani science. The 1st International Symposium on SHS under the leadership of G.I.Ksandopulo was held by our team in a difficult post-Soviet time for the country (Alma-Ata, 1991). At one of the subsequent symposiums, Academician Merzhanov A.G., gratefully noting the merits of Georgy Ivanovich, said: “... The level of the 1st International SHS Symposium exceeded all my expectations, the organization of the symposium was brilliant! Kazakhstan has become the Motherland of the International Symposium on SHS, this will remain in history!”. Since then, 15 International Symposiums have already been held in different countries of the world, by the way, the XI Symposium on SHS at a high level was held by Galina Georgievna Ksandopulo with colleagues in Greece (Athens, 2011). "XV International Symposium on Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis" was held in Moscow in September 2019. Within the framework of the symposium, one section was organized to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Professor Ksandopulo G.I. Session 4: SHS in metallurgy, welding, soldering dedicated to 90th Anniversary of Prof. Ksandopulo Georgii Ivanovich. Georgy Ivanovich delighted the participants with his report, liveliness of mind, cheerfulness, and a wonderful sense of humor. The trip of the delegation of Kazakhstan was organized by the director of the IPG, Professor Ketegenov T.A. Unfortunately, this was the last scientific trip of Georgy Ivanovich.Much can be written about the invaluable contribution of our Teacher to the science and education of Kazakhstan, about his human qualities. You can read more in the book dedicated to the 85th anniversary of G.I. in Kazakhstan, but also abroad, scientists-colleagues from different countries, friends.Prominent scientist and public figure Professor Z.A. Mansurov is the first student of G.I.Ksandopulo. Zulkhair Aitmukhametovich breathed new life into the work of both the department and the IPG, and now, in my opinion, he is a mentor of young personnel and an inspirer of everything new. In this century, nanotechnology has become a strategic area of science and technology, which requires the training of highly qualified specialists in this field. So, under his leadership, a group of teachers (Abdulkarimova R.G., Spanova G.A.) in 2018 for the first time in the Republic of Kazakhstan opened a specialty for undergraduate studies "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Chemistry", which ensures the continuity of education "bachelor's degree - master's degree - doctoral studies" (educational master's and doctoral programs were introduced earlier). IPG has created laboratories with new practically important areas with access to the sale of scientific products. The ideas and deeds of the Teacher continue to live!Interest in everything new, benevolence towards people, amazing love of life, optimism and inexhaustible energy are the main features of Georgy Ivanovich, which allowed him to live actively and continue his scientific activity until his last days. Georgy Ivanovich was and is for us the bearer of the true qualities of a person of the high rank of "Teacher"!

The textbook “Terminological Explanatory Dictionary”, which consists of 40.0 printed pages, was published by the publishing house of our university. The UNESCO Medal was established by the UNESCO Director-General in 2010 and is awarded annually to outstanding scientists and organizations who have made significant contributions to the progress of world science in these areas.
