The Department of Mathematics was founded on the basis of previously existing departments at the university, such as Fundamental Mathematics, Differential Equations and Control Theory in 2020

The Department of "Differential Equations and Control Theory" was founded in September 2011 as a result of merges of two departments of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics: the Department of Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics and the Department of Management Theory

The Department of "Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics" was founded in July 1946 on the initiative of K.P. Persian.

The educational activity of the department included questions of differential equations, the theory of functions of complex variables, probability theory, integral equations, calculus of variations, and stability theory. This was done by inviting the employees of the Mathematics and Mechanics Sector of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, headed by K.P. Persian, for part-time work.

By the end of 1940, the courses of functional analysis, group theory, topology, and other sections of mathematics had been introduced into the educational process of the department in order to improve the level of mathematical training of graduates of the department. In the early 50's a laboratory of computational mathematics was organized at the department.

 The research work was carried out in the directions of the theory of stability, the theory of countable and uncountable systems of differential equations, differential equations in linear normed spaces, the theory of abstract holomorphic functions and their applications to differential equations, as well as mathematical analysis and differential equations introduced into science by P. Persian in " non-linear normed spaces."

From 1952 to 1968, the department had the Academic Council for the award of the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences under the supervision of Academy of Sciences of the SSR, Doctor of Science (Ph.D.), prof. K.P. Persian.

From 1946 to 1997 more than 700 graduates of the faculty were trained at the department and more than 150 of them defended dissertations for obtaining the scientific degree of the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences in the directions of differential equations, some of them became doctors of sciences: S.S. Abdymanapov, V.M. Amerbaev, A.K. Bedelbayev, N.K. Bliev, E.I. Glusberg, OA Zhautykov, D.S. Zhumabayev, Yu.G. Zolotarev, K.A. Kasymov, K. Mynbayev, E.U. Medeuov, I.T. Pak, S.K. Persian, O.M. Sultanazin, Zh.S. Suleimenov, M.U. Tolegenov, D.U. Umbetzhanov, V.Kh. Kharasakhal, etc. The majority of graduates of the department headed universities, research institutes, faculties, departments, schools.

In 1997, the department of differential equations and equations of mathematical physics was organized by unifying the department with the Department of Mathematical Physics.

The Department of equations of mathematical physics, created in 1959 and the emergence of which is associated with the name of the founder of the Kazakhstan school of equations of mathematical physics, corresponding member of NAS RK, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, prof. E.I. Kim was supervised by:

In 2011 the department of differential equations and control theory was founded by department of differential equations and equations of mathematical physics and department of control theory merger.

Department of "Control theory" was organized in 1975. More than thirty years (since the beginning of its foundation until 2009) the Department had been directed by Honored Science, academician of IAI, academician of AS HS, doctor of technical sciences, professor S.A. Aisagaliev. The scientific school on the mathematical control theory originated by prof. S.A. Aisagaliev is known by the fundamental research results on controllability problem, boundary value optimal control problem, constructive theory of classical boundary value problems, absolute and global asymptotic stability of regulated and phase systems.

From 2009 to 2011 the department was headed by doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor S.Ya. Serovaisky, specialist known by research results on control theory for infinite dimensional systems, mathematical physics, nonlinear functional analysis.

From may to july of 2011 the department was directed by c.ph.-м.sc., doc. Т.Sh. Imankul.

From july of 2011, the moment of organization of the department of differential equations and control theory, it is head by d.ph.-m.sc., professor S.Т. Mukhambetzhanov.

In the present time, nine doctors, professors, 20 associate professors, 4 academicians of IAI, a corresponding member of NEA RK and a Honoured Scientist of the Republic of Kazakhstan work at the department.

The department of "Fundamental mathematics" was organized in accordance with the decision of the University Council on 31 October 1989 (Minutes № 2) and the Order of the Rector of KAZNU from 12.5 in1989 № 206, entitled "Functional analysis and probability theory." This decision was preceded by a decision of the Presidium of the Kazakh SSR on the feasibility of training in the field of probability theory based on the mathematics faculty of KAZNU named after S.M. Kirov. At the opening of the department worked eight full-time teachers: Prof. Kalmenov T.Sh, PhD., associate Bedelbaev A.A. Arenbaev N.K., to Physics and Mathematics, the head teachers are Akanbay N., Khan L., PhD., the assistant is Turmuhambetov D.N., and two bids lecturer and senior lecturer posts were vacan
