Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology is one of the first two faculties of the University founded in 1934. In the early years, the faculty trained only 22 students and worked two departments - botany and zoology. In 1938, two departments were established: Plant Physiology and Human and Animal physiology; in 1948 - Darwinism and Genetics, and Soil Science departments. Later a number of such departments as Hydrobiology and Ichthyology, Histology and Cytology, Microbiology, Biophysics, Biochemistry and Environmental Protection were opened. From the very first years of its existence, the faculty was characterized by a high level of teaching staff. The main scientific directions were laid by representatives of the best scientific schools of the country - Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, Kazan.  

     The first dean of the faculty was professor Mishchenko Pavel Ivanovich, an outstanding scientist, doctor of biological sciences; later who was later replaced by the greatest zoologists, doctor of biological sciences, professor Bartnev Alexander Nikolayevich. Among other deans there were V.A.Dogel, G.Z.Bijashev, F.H.Halilov, I.O.Bajtullin, M.H.Shigaeva, H. D. Duysembin who made a significant contribution to its development. Such prominent scientists as A.N.Bartnev, P.I.Mishchenko, P.I.Gromakovsky, N.V.Pavlov, A.S.Lazarenko, V.S.Kornilova, M.A.Rosenberg, V.A.Dogel, G.Z.Bijashev, B.A.Dombrovsky, T.B.Darkanbaev, N.L.Udolskaja, N.Z.Khusainov, M.F.Avazbakieva, A.P.Polosuhin, S.R.Shvartsman, I.O.Bajtullin, T.M.Masenov, P.A.Ler used to work here.

      Within 89 years, the Faculty has trained more than six thousand experts in different branches of biology who work in research institutions, industries and educational institutions not only in our country, but abroad as well. The faculty is proud of its graduates: M.A.Ajthozhin, an academician, the winner of the Lenin prize, president of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, as well as academicians I.O.Bajtullin, E.V.Gvozdev, who had also worked at the Academy of Sciences for many years.

      Nowadays our faculty is considered to be one of the major scientific and educational centers training highly qualified specialists in the national economy and business structures of Kazakhstan. It is being carried within the framework of credit technology for a multilevel education system: BA, MD and PhD. 

      At the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology the activity of the Methodological Bureau is aimed at improving the planning and organization of the educational process, the introduction of innovative and computer technologies in the educational process, monitoring the teaching and methodological support of the disciplines of the faculty, ensuring control over the methodological support of the educational process for each specialty, etc.
